Female boxer vows to fly Army flag at AAG

Lagos –  An Army private, Caroline Linus has vowed to fly the Nigerian Army’s flag at the forthcoming All African Games in Brazzaville, the Republic of Congo.

The AAG is scheduled to hold from Sept. 3 to Sept. 18.

Linus spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday at the ongoing Kenneth Minimah National Open Boxing Championship in Lagos.

She defeated her opponent, Mustapha Olamide of Lagos in the semi final of the championship, 2-0 in the flyweight category.

She said that it had been her dream to be at the games to represent the Army and Nigeria.

“I already have the confidence of beating my opponent to qualify for the final round of the championship.

“The spirit of the championship is in me, and as a soldier, I am not only here to fight but to make my colleagues in the Army proud.

“I have never relented in boxing and have vowed never to give up boxing, no matter how challenging it would be.

“That is why I am a soldier, ably representing the Nigerian Army and I promised not to bring shame to my colleagues,’’ the boxer said.

Linus described the Army’s flag as a symbol of “power and strength’’, adding that it had motivated her to perform creditably.

Muhammed Usman, who is a Lt. Col and the Commander, Nigeria Army Sports Camp in Yaba, expressed optimism that the boxer would do well in AAG.

He described Linus as a “very strong and hard working officer.”

“Although I expected the outcome of the match to be like that, but her opponent also turned out to be a very tough one,’’ Usman said. (NAN)
