Monarch urges journalists to expose corruption

Calabar – The Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Ekpo Okon-Abasi, has called on Nigerian Journalists to expose corruption and other societal ills through objective reportage.

The Obong made the call on Tuesday in Calabar when he received members of the Correspondents’ chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Cross River Chapter in his palace.

“Now we have a new administration in the country that says no to corruption; you have to stand up to report the truth at all times.

“You have to join the change that is going on in the country by reporting the truth and objectively too.

“If the government is wrong, tell them that they are wrong; do not hide anything, even if I am the one, ‘’ he said.

The monarch criticised journalists who write reports without cross-checking their facts, saying this does not augur well with their role as watch-dogs of the society.

While pledging the cooperation of the palace with journalists, Okon-Abasi assured that palace officials would always provide them with the right information when needed.

He challenged journalists in Cross River to do more detailed analysis on the economic and tourism potential of state.

Earlier, leader of the team, Mr Judex Okoro, said the chapel was at the palace to seek the blessing of the monarch and to solicit his collaboration in the discharge of their duties.
