Lawmaker urges FG, states to invest more on youths development

Lagos – A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Olushola Shokunle on Sunday urged both the Federal and State governments to be more committed to youths development to secure a future for the nation.

Shokunle, representing Oshodi/Isolo I at the Lagos State House of Assembly made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, Nigerian youths have all it will takes to change the image and fortunes of the country.

He said, “The government should take the responsibility to make our youths productive and channel their youthful energy to developmental activities.

“Government must give the youths the proper attention to make them positively productive and engaged.

“Our neglect of the youths has made the society unsafe.

“For us to have a positive and prosperous environment, greater attention must be given to the youths in the areas of education and sports,” he said.

Shokunle said that he had empowered 400 youths to register for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Oshodi.

The lawmaker pledged to provide more support to the youth to make them self reliant.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]

“I take it as a responsibility to ensure that our youths are taken off the streets and that they are encouraged to add value to the society and themselves.

“We have a pressing duty to eradicate illiteracy and place our youths on a path of sustainable growth and development.

“This made me give out free UTME forms and organise free coaching classes for students so as to make them compete favourable with their counterparts across the nation.

“Our Educational Support Scheme is a new intervention to pursue new priority and new approach to the educational and socio-economic transformation of Oshodi,’’ Shokunle said.

The lawmaker said that the first set of youths participating in a three months free computer training at his constituency office in Oshodi would soon graduate while more would be admitted to other empowerment schemes.

He therefore urged youths in the constituency to shun crime and violence in order to fulfil their dreams.

NAN recalls that the lawmaker on Thursday gave award to students who excelled at the Pre- UTME Mock Examination organised at Oshodi.(NAN)
