Abuja – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commended the Chinese government for assisting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to acquire skills in the country.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Officer of the commission, Fatimah Mohammed, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Sunday.
It stated that the Executive Secretary, Prof. Bem Angwe, gave the commendation when he received the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Mr Qin Jian.
Angwe, who commended the interest of Chinese government in promotion and protection of human rights, said Nigerian government had demonstrated commitment to human rights protection.
He said the amendment of the enabling law setting up the commission had granted it autonomy and independence to discharge its mandate effectively.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
The executive secretary, who noted that Nigeria and China shared common bonds that had been in existence for decades, said both countries stood to gain by continuing to work together.
Earlier, Jian had said that China like other friends of Nigeria, was concerned about the ongoing conflicts in some parts of the country as a result of insurgency.
The Chargé d’Affaires said that the Chinese government was willing to lend a hand of support, especially, to the victims of the insurgency.
He commended the commission for its efforts to ensure that the rights of Nigerians were protected and respected. (NAN)
