Abuja – Sen. Yusuf Yusuf, Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, has urged the Federal Government to utilise technology in its efforts to diversify national economy.
Yusuf made the call when he featured in the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum, on Thursday in Abuja.
The senator said that such efforts would fast-track the progress of the country toward self-reliance.
“Science and technology has been the in-thing for the development of nations.
“Nigeria will not be an exemption to be part and parcel of utilising science and technology for national development.
`The area of science and technology, we all know the level or the stage that we are passing through in this country.
We cannot go into diversification of our economy without active participation of science and technology.
“So, to that effect, science and technology is very important and vital for the direction, or the future direction of this country.
On diversification of energy sources, he said that the committee was discussing with the relevant entrepreneurs, MDAs, institutions and researchers for its realisation.
The vice chairman noted that the fundamental issue was pricing.
“A lot has been done and we are doing a lot of consultations on how we can bring alternative to the sources of energy in this country.
“If the pricing is not right you cannot generate and sell at the price of which the production of the entrepreneur will meet their own good returns.
“A lot is being done, my committee that is, science and technology has been doing a lot since the passage of the budget.
“I think much has been done in that regard,’’ he said. (NAN)
