New Delhi – The baby of a 13-year-old Indian rape victim who was allowed to have an abortion by the Supreme Court has died, a Doctor at a Mumbai hospital said on Tuesday.
The girl was more than 32 weeks pregnant when she underwent a caesarean operation on Friday to deliver the baby boy, said Ashok Anand of JJ Hospital.
Indian law prohibits medical termination of pregnancies after 20 weeks, except when the mother’s life is at risk.
In this case the Supreme Court gave permission for the procedure accepting recommendations by doctors who examined her that she would suffer extreme mental trauma if she went through with the pregnancy.
“The baby was premature and underweight. He had smaller organs including the lungs and heart and had respiratory restrictions; he died on Sunday,’’ Anand said.
The girl was doing well and would be released in a couple of days, he added.
The child’s parents discovered she was pregnant on Aug. 9 when her mother took her to a doctor in Mumbai to understand why she was suddenly gaining weight after which they approached the court.
A colleague of the girl’s father has been arrested for the rape. (dpa/NAN)
