Ibadan – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Oyo state sector command, has advised road users and other stakeholders in the state to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
The state sector commander, Mr Yusuff Salami, gave the advice on Thursday in Ibadan at a workshop tagged: “Oyo Sector Fleet Operators 2016.”
The workshop had as its theme: “Full Implementation of Road Transport Standards by Fleet Operators.”
Salami said that the workshop was part of the initiatives the commission had put together to reduce the increasing rate of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) in the state.
“The workshop is organised to encourage stakeholders comply with road traffic standards.
“We want them to know that any organisation with at least three vehicles must register and comply with the regulations of fleet operations,” he said.
In his remarks, Mr Adekunle Adefila, the legal officer of the sector, observed that road crashes involving fleet operators were on the increase.
He said that 60 per cent of the accidents on the road were caused by recklessness on the part of road users and lack of maintenance culture by fleet operators.
He said that section 5 and 10 of FRSC Establishment Act, 2007, gave the commission the mandate to regulate road operation.
Also speaking, Mr Femi Adeyemo, FRSC Route Commander, said that any driver who did not possess driving licence is a killer.
He said that the FRSC had initiated the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS) to either reduce or eliminate road accident.
He advocated periodic talk shops where transport operators would be educated on traffic rules and regulations.
Adefila advised fleet operators, who have at least three vehicles to establish safety unit, appoint Safety Officer and register with Corporate Affairs Commission. (NAN)
