Daura – Maize Growers Association of Nigeria (MAN) in Katsina State on Monday said it would distribute farming inputs to 15,441 members to boost maize production and enhance food security in the state.
The Chairman of the association, Alhaji Lawal Garba, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Daura.
He said the farmers would receive the inputs under the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers’ Agricultural Programme, adding that the inputs include fertiliser, seeds, herbicides and insecticides.
He said four bags of fertiliser and 20 kg of seeds would be provided per hectare, depending on the number of hectares registered against an individual farmer.
He also said that the programme, which started last year, had ensured food security, self sufficiency and stability of price of the commodity.
Garba said the association had also provided market for maize in the state at reasonable price, adding, “the loan would be paid after harvesting season.”
He commended the federal government for diversifying the economy, saying that agriculture had generated millions of jobs for the farmers.
NAN reports that no fewer than 10,120 farmers in the 34 local government areas in the state benefited from the Maize Anchor Borrower’s loan scheme in 2018.
