BIRNIN KEBB – Contractors handling the reconstruction of the 189km Jega-Birnin Yauri Federal road project in Kebbi State have abandoned the project, a survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed.
NAN correspondent reports that with the rainy season setting in, the road has become a death trap for motorists due to its derelict state.
Some of the motorists who spoke with NAN in separate interviews appealed to the Federal Government to compel the contractors to return to site in order to ameliorate their sufferings.
Commenting on the project, the Federal Controller of Works in the state, Mr Muhammad Goni, told NAN that the contract was re-awarded in February.
He said that the project was awarded to M/S Triacta Nigeria Ltd, adding that the lack of prompt payment to the contractor was responsible for the delay in the commencement of work.
Goni, however, said that it was the responsibility of his office to ensure effective monitoring of the project to facilitate its speedy completion in line with the contractual agreements.
