Ikeja – Two auto mechanics — Akinwumi Ismaila and Lukmon Salami — on Thursday appeared
before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a customer’s laptop and other valuables estimated at N270,00.
The accused — Ismaila, 39, and Salami, 36 — who both reside in Agege area of Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of
conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecution alleged that the accused with others still at large conspired to steal N270,00 valuables, property of the
complainant, Mr Omon Newton.
Accroding to Sgt. Michael Unah, the accused committed the offences on April 13 at Church Street, Agege, a Lagos suburb.
Unah said the accused stole a Dell laptop valued at N148, 000, a bag containing two international passports, two pairs of shoes
valued at N102, 000 and other valuable documents as well as a car battery valued at N20, 000.
“The complainant’s car developed a fault and left it with the accused to work on it. The complainant went to pick his car the
following day and found out that his belongings have been stolen,” Unah said.
The offences violated Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing, while while Section
411 provides two years for conspiracy.
The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and the Magistrate, Mr A. A. Fashola, granted them bail in the sum
N80, 000 each with one surety each in like sum.
Fashola said the sureties should be gainfully employed and have their addresses verified by the court.
He adjourned the case until May 30 for mention.
