2 in court for theft, stabbing student with broken bottle

LAGOS – Two men, Morufu Cole, 27 and Suleman Tukur, 26, were on Friday arraigned in a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for stabbing a student with a broken bottle and stealing his property.
Cole lives at No. 4, Iduntafa St., Lagos Island, Lagos, while Tukur resides at No. 14, Iduntafa St., Lagos Island, Lagos.
The accused, both of whom claimed to be businessmen, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault occasioning harm and stealing.
The prosecutor, SP Chidi Okoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences along with others now at large, at 8 p.m., on Dec. 15, at Lagos Island, Lagos.
He said that Cole and Tukur attacked one, Ahmed Fashola by stabbing him repeatedly in the face with broken bottles during an argument at a party.
Okoye said that the complainant sustained serious facial injuries which required urgent medical attention.
He added that the accused and their accomplices also stole cash, an I-phone and a necklace all valued at N175,000 belonging to the complainant.
According to him, the offences contravened sections 171, 285 and 401 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes three years imprisonment for anyone convicted of assault occasioning harm.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O Awogboro, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 18, 2015 for mention. (NAN)
