Lafia – No fewer than 200 fishermen received fishing equipment under Federal Government’ Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES) in Nasarawa State.
The Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Nasarawa, Alhaji Umaru Mohammed, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia on Saturday.
Mohammed said that the GES was established by the Federal Government so as to make farming inputs reach the door steps of farmers.
“The Federal Government is determined to improve agricultural sector in order to ensure food sufficiency to fight youth unemployment, reduce poverty for the overall development of the country.
“The scheme is to ensure the development of agriculture and promote food security in the country in order to fight hunger, poverty, unemployment and others social vices.
“Under the scheme, we have distributed 40 bundles of fishing nets, 4,000 float rubbery, 80 spool thread, 80 sinker sheets, marine ropes, among others.
“They were distributed free of charge to 200 fishermen this year in order to boost agricultural production for the benefit of all.
“We are supposed to distribute this fishing equipment to fishermen in the state last year, but due to some unavoidable reasons, we could not.
“That is why we distributed the fishing equipment to over 200 farmers this year,” Mohammed said.
According to him, the distribution of the fishing equipment will go a long way in boosting fishing production as well as boosting agricultural production.
Mohammed said that the Federal Government through the ministry had made available improved seeds such as cashew, oil palm, Soya beans, among others crops to farmers in the state.

He commended the Federal and state governments for giving priority to the agricultural sector, among others. (NAN)
