ABUJA – Stakeholders on Wednesday lauded Nigeria’s Super Falcons over their 2-1 victory against South Africa in the semi-final of the 2014 African Women Championship (AWC) in Namibia.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a first half brace from Asisat Oshoala ensured Nigeria booked a final ticket to the final of the AWC after beating South Africa 2-1 in Windhoek.
A cross section of football stakeholders told NAN in separate interviews in Abuja that the team had represented the country well so far.
Tunde Poopola, Secretary General of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), appreciated the team for giving their South African counterparts a good run for their money.
“The Super Falcons have really proved themselves to be a good side and I am happy that they have saved our image not just in Africa but in the world.
“They have indeed regained their lost pride in Africa and have gotten a very sweet revenge against their perennial rivals.
“The victory is so sweet because not only has it given them a final berth in the AWC but it also makes them the first team to qualify for the 2015 Women World Cup in Canada.
“It is their first game and I am sure that they will be better in their subsequent matches,” he said.
Emmanuel Babayaro, an ex-international, said he was happy that the team did well; adding that he had expected a win from them.
“I had expected them to win and I am happy that they were successful.
“I just want them to be more focused now and apply team work into their final game. I am sure they will bring back the trophy home,” Babayaro said.
Godwin Bamigboye, FCT Chairman, Nigeria Football Coaches Association, said Falcons had made the country proud.
“I will say that what Super Eagles cannot do for us, the Super Falcons have done even better.
“I hope this victory can spur the Eagles ahead of their remaining Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier matches against Congo Brazzaville and South Africa.
“The girls have done well so far and I confidently say now that nothing can stop them from reclaiming their AWC title,’’ he said.
Moroof Oluwa, Secretary General, Nigeria Referees Association on his part, urged the Super Falcons to remain focused; urging them to keep the flag flying and ensure that they finished up the good work they have started.
The Super Falcons will now face the winner of the Cameroon /Cote d’Ivoire match in the final on Oct. 11, while their Southern African counterparts will face the loser for the third spot for the World Cup.
The AWC serves as the qualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada with the top three teams at the competition qualifying to represent Africa. (NAN)
