ILORIN – Coach Edwin Okon of the national senior women football team, the Super Falcons, is optimistic the team’s goal scoring problems will be solved with the presence of the foreign-based players. A statement from the team’s Media Officer, Gracious Akujobi, on Friday said the inability of the team to convert scoring opportunities has been a major problem for the technical crew.
“I am hopeful that with Perpetua Nkwocha, Desire Oparanozie and Francisca Ordega, who are among the eight invited foreign-based players, we will score more goals,’’ it quoted Okon as saying.
The Super Falcons are preparing for the 2014 African Women Championship (AWC) qualifying matches against Rwanda.
The statement further quoted Okon as saying the invited foreign-based players must however prove they are better than their home-based counterparts to get the nod to play against Rwanda.
“Everybody will get an equal chance to make the team which will travel to Kigali to face Rwanda on May 24.
“There is no automatic jersey for anybody, no matter where you are coming from.
“They are all Nigerians and they all have equal rights in the team. All I want is the best for the country and I will use the best.
“I am glad that the foreign-based players will start arriving in camp by next week and I know they will be great additions to the team.
“Hopefully, they will help in solving the team’s poor goal scoring problems,” Okon said in the statement.
It further quoted the coach as saying the team’s technical crew was working tirelessly to ensure that the home-based players were in good shape before their foreign-based counterparts’ arrival.
The Super Falcons will travel to Kigali for the first leg of the AWC qualifiers scheduled for May 24.
The return leg will hold in Nigeria between the weekend of June 6 and June 8.(NAN)
