ONITSHA – Musical Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (MPDAN) on Wednesday urged Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra to extend the mandate of the Security Taskforce on criminals perpetrating musical piracy.

The National Secretary of the association, Mr Sunny Agubosim, made the plea while speaking with newsmen in Onitsha, Anambra.

Agubosim said the work of the taskforce would be incomplete “if pirates are not flushed out of Onitsha and other parts of Anambra’’.

He said the pirates had been operating with “high sense of impunity’’.

“Your Excellency Sir, we wish to bring to your notice the menace caused by some individuals and corporate bodies who duplicate original copies of musical works on Compact Disks (CD).

“While others transfer musical products into MP3 and MP4 cards as well as flash disks and memory cards and other devices.

“They sell it to the general public without regard to the law and prior permission of the rightful owners.

“All these atrocities are committed even in the open and established markets in Onitsha and its environs,’’ Agubosim said.

He said the executives and owners of markets and plazas in Onitsha had been served petitions on the illegal activities of pirates in their various places.

“We have urged them to get rid of those indulging in piracy but to no avail, ” Agubosim said.
