Police re-arraign ex-convict for allegedly dispossessing motorist of N258, 000 valuables

LAGOS – An ex-convict, Ayobami Akinwale, 22, who allegedly dispossessed a motorist of his belongings, valued at N258, 000 was arraigned at a court on Monday in Lagos.
Akinwale, who is also a conductor with no fixed address, was charged with conspiracy and stealing at an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, said that the accused committed the offences on Dec. 9 at Oshodi-Oworosoki area of Ilupeju, Lagos.
He said that the accused and others, still at large, conspired to dispossess one Anthony Odeh of his property valued at N258, 000.
“The complainant was in traffic when the accused and four others emerged from nowhere and started banging his car.
“Thinking that something had happened, he rolled down and before he could know what was going on, the accused forced the car door opened and rushed inside it.”
Olatunde said that the accused pointed knives and other dangerous weapons at the complainant to remain silent and surrender all his belonging and threatened to stab him if he refused to comply.
“They forcefully collected his wedding ring valued at N120, 000, Samsung phone valued at N95, 000 and a cash of N43, 000.
“They took to their heeds, the complainant raised alarm and Good Samaritans pursued them but only the accused was arrested while the others escaped with the items”.
The prosecutor said that the accused was recently released from prison for committing a similar offence.
“He was recently released from prison and now in court for robbing motorists during traffic.”
The offences, Olatunde said, contravened Sections 285 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr O.L. Owolabi, adjourned the case till Dec.22 for trial. (NAN)
