LAGOS – A legal practitioner, Mr Ahamdi Adikwuru, on Thursday said the success of the 2015 general elections would depend on the appointment of non-partisan judges into election tribunals.
”It is very important that the appointment of judicial officers to adjudicate election disputes is not subject to political advantages, interests and parochial leanings.
”This point is the crux of the matter when public analysts will be doing a post 2015 general election evaluation,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that Nigeria’s international image would improve if it organised credible elections that met international standards in 2015.
He added that the volume of litigations that would come before the tribunals would be a good indicator of how credible the polls were.
”We should use this coming elections to further deepen democracy and raise the respect we get from the international community,” he said.
Adikwuru said that past election tribunals had delivered ground breaking judgments that now constituted reference points in the nation’s democratisation process.
The legal practitioner said: ”Nigeria’s judiciary has a favourable place in the nation’s history of political, economic and social developments.”(NAN)
