LAGOS – The National Conscience Party (NCP) on Wednesday called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow all political parties to contest the 2015 general elections.
The NCP National Chairman, Dr Yunusa Tanko, made the call at a news conference held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota in Lagos, to mark the party’s 20th anniversary.
Tanko addressed the conference after the party held a rally from Maryland through Oshodi to Ikeja and then the late Chief Gani’s Fawehinmi’s house, where it unveiled a roll call of about 300 pioneers and heroes of the party.
Fawehinmi, a legal icon, social critic and human rights campaigner, founded the NCP.
Tanko said that INEC and the National Assembly (NASS) members were already calling for constitutional amendments to edge out political parties which had not won a seat in the assembly. [eap_ad_1] Tanko said that the party had appealed against the judgment of a Federal High Court which empowered INEC to de-register political parties that failed to win any seat in the National Assembly.
“The NCP is not comfortable and was much embarrassed at the desperation of NASS and INEC to continue to de-register political parties,“ he said.
Tanko claimed that it was only NCP that provided equal platforms for the masses to contest elections because it made free its registration forms for contesting elections at all levels.
He said that NCP was what Nigerians needed to bring about the desired social change, youth empowerment, eradication of poverty, provision of infrastructure and other amenities for rapid development of the country.
The national chairman called for the support of Nigerians toward the growth of the party, urging those who left the party to return. (NAN)
