ABUJA – Rep. Mohammed Kalgo (PDP-Kebbi) said on Wednesday that it might be impracticabe for INEC to conduct the 2015 general elections due to insurgency in some parts of the country.
Kalgo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that unless the situation was brought under control by the use of force, the lives of the electorate might be under threat during voting.
Kalgo said that in view of the ongoing insurgency affecting the North East, elections in the country would be inconclusive.
According to him, the country is in a state of war and there is every need to deal with the situation with force.
“Supposing you start election and people are in the business of voting and these people come and start killing people, so what good have you done by having the election at that period.
“I don’t know how else you can practicalise this because we are in a state of war.
“There are some parts of the country that the flag of Nigeria is not flying.
“There is no way you can have this issue sorted out unless you use force. [eap_ad_2] “Force has been used to drive Nigerian state from its territory, so Nigerian state must use force to reclaim its territory and there is no way of doing that except through war.”
Kalgo, however, expressed support for the Independent National Electoral Commission’s plan to create additional polling units in the country.
“That INEC plans to create additional polling units is to ensure a hitch-free elections across the country,’’ he added.
The legislator expressed the belief that INEC must have done its homework to ensure that not more than 500 people were registered in a polling unit.
“This is to avoid chaos in the process.
“`To avoid that kind of situation, I reason with INEC to see that polling booths don’t have more than 500 in order to ease matters and ensure hitch-free elections.
“I see nothing wrong with that; I do not see any reason for bickering for something simply done to ease the work of INEC.
“INEC has a duty to give the nation a hitch-free election and if that is what they need to do to achieve this, let them do it,’’ Kalgo said. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
