GWAGWALADA – Dr. Yusuf Zoaka, the Head of Political Science Department of the Abuja University, , has urged politicians to obey the rule of law, to prevent the collapse of Nigeria’s democracy.
Zoaka, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gwagwalada, FCT, on Friday, criticised the attempt to prevent the Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, gaining access into the National Assembly on Thursday.
He said: “Tambuwal is still the Speaker, House of Representatives, and should be allowed to run his office until duly removed by the majority of the house.
“The politicians should be very careful and respect the rule of law governing the country, to prevent our democracy from collapsing.
“Since he is still the speaker, he should not be stopped from entering the House until constitutionally removed from his seat.
“As long as he is still in power, all the privileges of that office should be accorded to him until removed from that position.”
He, therefore, urged security operatives to tread cautiously while maintaining peace and order.
He said that the Nigerian Police should operate based on the constitution as the force is accountable to the citizens of the country.
“We must shun violence; instead of fighting over political interests and ethnic bias, let us embrace peace.
“What happened recently in Burkina Faso is likely going to happen, if adequate measures are not put in place to forestall ensure peace.
“Consider the number of people that lost their lives, especially in the North-East; let us join forces against violence in our nation today.
“We must come together and work closely with one another; that way, we can enthrone peace.
“It is by so doing that we will be able to evolve a developmental agenda and chart the way forward for the country,’’ Zaoka said. (NAN)
