ABUJA – An Abuja-based legal practitioner, Mr Hilary Ogbonna, has urged political parties and politicians not to use the judiciary to achieve selfish political ambition.
Ogbonna, who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja, said that politicians were creating confusion in the polity.
“I really think that politicians are creating a lot of confusion, and we can only pray that our courts are not used as a pun in the chase game of politicians.
“I also hope that we will really have peaceful and credible elections, because the way it is going now, there would be a lot of confusion based on the primaries conducted so far.
“Even with the parallel primaries, many of the political parties will still go to court to determine which one is the authentic primary,’’ he said.
Ogbonna said that there would be serious legal implications, if cases instituted in courts as a result of the primaries conducted were not concluded before the February general elections.
He explained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ), may be barred by the court from conducting an election, if any of the aggrieved parties secured an injunction.
NAN recalls that several candidates who were aggrieved as a result of the recent primaries conducted by political parties are in court seeking redress.
NAN also recalls that a good number of these candidates have defected to other political parties. (NAN)
