2015 polls: Oyo NLC inaugurates committee to screen candidates

IBADAN – Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday inaugurated a 20-member political committee to  screen candidates and sensitise voters.

The inauguration of the committee held at  the NLC Secretariat at  Idi Quarters, Ibadan.

NAN also reports that the committee led by Mr Wale Araba has  Prof. Olusegun Ajiboye  as Vice Chairman  and  Titi Adesina as Secretary.

Speaking at the forum, the state Chairman of the union, Dr Basiru Olanrewaju, said the committee was set up in compliance with a directive of the NLC Secretariat.

He said  members of the committee  “are to scout round on behalf of the NLC, monitor the candidates  and ensure that they are not merely partisan, but only the best.’’

“The committee is not going to collect any money on behalf of the NLC, but to enlighten us and the electorate so that we can have free and fair elections  by 2015.

“The members are to screen the candidates, irrespective of their political affiliations,  before adopting the best for the people,’’ Olanrewaju said.

The committee, he added, is  to “engage in civic education of the Nigerian masses with regard to payment of taxes, voters registration and  holding political leaders to the responsibilities of prudent management of  state resources.’’

Responding on behalf of the committee members, Araba and Ajiboye  promised not to betray the trust which the union reposed in them. (NAN)
