FIIRO urges unemployed to create jobs through research products

Lagos – The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, has called on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), retirees and unemployed graduates to patronise its research products to create employment.

Dr Gloria Elemo, the Director-General, FIIRO, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

Elemo said that industrial research and food technology were tools capable of creating employment to jobless graduates and the likes.

According to her, the institute’s training programmes are unique and capable of generating employment opportunities for Nigerians.

“At the moment, FIIRO has over 250 research products waiting to be utilised and this is a better platform for youths to embrace research to create jobs.

“The institute has about 20 training programmes which can give immediate employment to trainees,’’ she said.

According to her, some of the training programmes include cassava flour processing, electroplating and plug refurbishing, pounded yam flour making, fresh fruit juicing and preservation, packaged palm wine production.

“Others are snail farming, smoked fish processing and packaging, and assorted laundry soap production,’’ Elemo said.

She said that each of the programmes cost between N15, 000 and N20, 000, adding that the beneficiaries had formed cooperative society through which members accessed fund.

She also urged the incoming government at all levels to priotise industrial research as a panacea for employment generation. (NAN)
