Kano- The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kano State has appealed to the state government to review its pension scheme.

The NLC chairman in the state, Kabiru Ado, made the appeal while briefing newsmen as part of activities lined up to commemorate the Workers’ Day in Kano on Friday.

Ado, who was recently elected as the chairman of the union, said: said ” We are particularly concerned about the issue of leave grant, the fate of pensioners as well as the unfolding events regarding the pension system in the state which is unacceptable to us.’’

According to him, the congress intends to liaise with all relevant stakeholders to find amicable solutions to the salient issues affecting workers.

The NLC chairman said the union would forward a request to the state government to establish a labour-government consultative committee as well as appoint industrial officers at the local government level..

‘’This will pave way for smooth and effective labour-government relationship in the state.

“While payment of salaries of workers is one of the statutory functions of government, we condemn the slashing of salaries of workers by some state governments,’’ he said.

He called on workers in the state to continue to be dedicated to their duties to enhance productivity.

The labour chief said as nation builders, workers should remain ever ready to encourage and promote the idea of good governance.

“As organised labour, we will continue to protect and promote the socio-economic interest of the working class.

“ ’We shall at all times remain committed in discharging our duties and responsibilities as your elected representatives,’’he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN )reports that other activities lined up to mark the workers’ Day include a symposium and visits to hospitals, aged persons, prisons and children’s home. (NAN)
