Ilorin- Hosts Kwara United FC of Ilorin on Sunday at the Kwara Sports Stadium defeated Kano Pillars 1-0 to leapfrog the Premier League defending champions.
The Ilorin-based team got the winning goal through Emma Eviemere who nodded in an Evans Iyoro’s cross.
The combination of former Boavista midfielder Femi Oladapo, Eviemere and Muhammed Abdullahi proved to be too strong for the defending champions for the hosts to hold sway.
Home-based Super Eagles star Rabiu Ali came close to scoring at the half hour mark but his header was wide high.
He remained less productive for the Pillars until he was substituted.
Kano Pillars missed too many scoring chances, with their attackers very wasteful in front of Kwara United goal.
However, goalkeeper Kazeem Yekeen put up a man-of-the-match performance, making some great saves to record his second clean sheet since taking over from Shagari Ismail.
Speaking after the game, Kwara United’s Technical Adviser, Tunde Abdulrahman, admitted it was a tough game while describing Kano
Pillars a good side and a big team in the country.
He however said that did not take anything away from his team, as they also deserve the same respect.
Abdulrahman however admitted that his team lacked a good finisher, promising to address the issue in week nine when the transfer window would be open.
“But we have too many players out injured who should have started the game if they were available for the match,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kwara United now have 11 points from a possible 21 in seven matches.
They will travel to Umuahia next Sunday to lock horns with Abia Warriors in a week eight encounter.(NAN)
