Kano – Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Tuesday ordered the destruction of illicit and fake drugs as part of efforts to save the state from the clutches of drug peddlers.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the drugs were estimated at more than N97 million.
Ganduje, who spoke at NDLEA Head Quarters in the state capital, urged groups and individuals to support the government’s efforts in fighting drug abuse to ensure a decent society.
“We will continue to work very hard in reducing drug trafficking and abuse to the barest minimum,’’ he said.
He assured the stakeholders of government support and cooperation in the fight against fake, counterfeit and unwholesome processed food and drug products in the state.
The governor commended the agency, state task force and student organisations for the gains recorded by the state in the fight against drugs.
“What we are destroying today is what the innocent people of this state would have consumed but with the quick intervention and support of the task force and agencies involved, we were able to confiscate them,” Ganduje said.
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso, assured that the state government would not relent in its effort to rid the state of fake drugs and drug abuse.
Getso also called on the public to report any suspicious movement to the committee for appropriate action.
He said that the state government had destroyed more than N4 billion worth of fake, counterfeit and expired drugs between 2012 and 2015 in the state.
The Commandant of the NDLEA, Malam Hamza Umar, thanked the governor for his efforts in combating drug abuse in the state and restated his readiness in making the state free of dangerous drugs. (NAN)
