A group, VOLUNTEER 4RIVERS, has commended elders and leaders of thought in Rivers State for supporting security officers in their determined efforts to rid the state of arms and criminal elements.
Rivers Elders had, in a statement a few days ago signed by Engineer Theophilus Igwe, wondered why Governor Nyesom Wike would openly
criticise security agencies for working hard, even at the risk of their lives, to rid Rivers of armed robbery, gun running, murder and intimidation in a lawful society.
In a statement made available to journalists and signed by Ikenda Clinton, its coordinator in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, VOLUNTEER 4RIVERS called on the people of the state to
re-invent themselves by returning Rivers to the path of civility, peace and prosperity.
“Finally, the chicken has now come home to roost. Rivers people now know those who are behind the siege on their state. Security is the primary duty of every government and there is no greater service than the protection of lives and property. If the chief executive of a state can overtly endorse lawlessness, then we are all vulnerable and
in real trouble.
“We commend our elders and leaders for standing up and speaking out with one voice. We all know what insecurity and breakdown of law and
order can do to any society. This is also an indication that our people are no longer divided by parochial interests and party affiliation. We are all victims of this callous and mindless administration and the earlier we unite in pursuit of our common goal, the better for all of us.
“It would amount to sheer foolhardiness on our path, given all we have seen to shy away from the truth. Fact is, we are all victims and our liberation has only just begun. So we must all join hands with our elders and ensure that other dark spots that harbour arms and undesirable elements are raided and in good time to pave way for the Rivers of our dream.
“We also commend the security agents and we call on our people to give them all the necessary support. Our state must be free and we have all
it takes as a people to liberate Rivers”
