Enugu- The Enugu State Police Command on Wednesday cautioned drivers, tricycle operators and passengers to be wary of collecting edibles and water from strangers while embarking on journeys.
The command’s spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that the command was intensifying efforts to fish-out criminals that drugged and robbed passengers.
He said that the criminals also dispossessed victims of their possessions.
“The command has intensified manhunt with sister security agencies and relevant stakeholders to fish them out so that they can face the full wrath of the law,’’ Amaraizu said.
He said that police, recently through a tip off, arrested a suspect, Sunday Chukwu, who allegedly drugged one, Emmanuel Okoro, along Ogbete Main Market axis.
“It was gathered through the probe by police operatives that the suspect and victim were discovered to be co-passengers in a tricycle.
“The passenger had boarded the said tricycle from Agbani road axis to Ogbete Main Market.
“While in the tricycle, the suspect allegedly offered the victim already poisoned sachet water which the victim drank and became unconscious.
“Consequently, the victim broke down at a nearby shop where the suspect trailed him to search his pockets in order to collect his money and valuables.
“It was gathered that while stealing money and valuables from the victim who was unconscious and lying down, police operatives were alerted by members of the public.
“The police operatives arrested the suspect and rescued the victim who was taken to hospital for medical attention.’’
Amaraizu said the suspect revealed how his gang used to drug tricycle or taxi drivers and passengers with a view to dispossessing them of their vehicles and other valuables.
