Gombe – The Gombe State Cycling Association is to commence Inter-Local Government competition to identify talents.
The state cycling Coach, Malam Garba Babaji, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Friday.
“There are talents at the grassroots, we need to identity them,’’ Babaji said.
He said the competition would commence in December and would last for a week.
According to him, during the competition which will cover 60km, 12 people from each of the 11 local governments will represent the council areas.
The coach said that in 2015, Gombe participated in National Try Luck competition in Lagos and a boy from Gombe, Adamu Abubakar won a silver medal.
He identified lack of motivation for cyclists as their major constraint.
“There are talented children but because they have not been getting allowances or stipends, some of them left the association.
“Also we have only 10 functional bicycles which were purchased by the state government.
“And we have 16 active cyclists currently who are ready to represent the state in any capacity,’’ Babaji said.
He called on philanthropists in the state to assist the association by encouraging more participation in the sport through sponsorship of competitions.
