Gaborone – Botswana on Tuesday launched the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Netball Youth World Cup 2017.
At the occasion the Botswana Sports, Youth and Culture Minister Thapelo Olopeng said the competition would lift the country’s ranking in sports development.
“It will be the first time this tournament is played in Africa with 20 countries including Australia and Britain participating. We are getting somewhere,” said Olopeng.
Botswana has been awarded the rights to host the 2017 Netball Youth World Youth ahead of its bid rival, Cook Islands.
Botswana Netball Association (BONA) president, Tebogo Lebotse, is excited about the development, saying: “It’s done. I’ve waited for this moment since 2013. It’s a long road ahead. But we will take it head-on.’’
Lebotse assured the nation that the organising committee would deliver on its mandate.
He said no fewer than 200 young netballers and officials from competing countries would be at the 2017 championship.
