Karu    –    The Nasarawa State Government has warned private hospitals in the state against sharp practices, including illegal surgery.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Iya, gave the warning on Monday in Karu, in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Iya expressed concern over the proliferation of illegal health facilities in the state and urged such facilities to shun unethical practices.

He said that the state government was poised to sanitise the health sector and would deal decisively with any erring health professional in the state.

NAN recalls that the state government recently shut down over 40 defaulting private hospitals and laboratories in Karu Local Government Area, in its bid to ensure quality health delivery in the state.

“The inspection tour of private health establishments is not meant to witch-hunt anybody but to ensure that ethical practices are upheld.

“It is also meant to identify the registered and unregistered clinics and hospitals in the state for the benefit of all.

“His Excellency, Gov.Tanko Al-Makura, has been doing his best in improving the health services to the people of the state.

“We as ministry will not condone any sharp practices, including illegal operation by private health establishments in the state.

“We will continue to monitor the activities of all health facilities in the state to ensure that the private ones do not operate beyond their limit.

“Any of them found wanting will face the full wrath of the law,” he said

The commissioner, however, appreciated the contributions of the private health facilities, but added that sanity must prevail in the system.

Iya called on the registered health facilities in the state to always update their particulars with the ministry, and urged those who wished to open new ones to also seek clearance.

He said government remained committed to initiating good health policies, and appealed to the residents, to always volunteer information on the activities of quacks in the sector, to the relevant authorities.
