Biafra: We’ll Lobby National Assembly For Referendum, Igbos Will Disappoint Nnamdi Kanu – Yerima Shettima

The leader of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, Yerima Shittima has disclosed they will start lobbying the National Assembly to include referendum in the ongoing constitution amendments.

Shettima told Punch that the Northern youths would not use force to effect the quit notice it gave to the Igbos.

The AYCF leader, however, expressed confidence that the referendum would not favour the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, and other secessionists.

He said the people of the South east would reject secession.

The referendum, he explained, would enable those who were desirous of leaving the federation to do so without force.

He said, “We are also planning to lobby members of the National Assembly to formally agree to a referendum on Biafra. We want the Igbo to have the opportunity of voting on this issue.

“We are saying Nigeria cannot sign international treaties and not implement them. We want a constitutional amendment for referendum because it is not currently part of our constitution.”

Shettima further said the group will hold consultations across the North on the need for a referendum.

He said, “We are expecting the UN to respond and we would also talk to our lawmakers, but we are in consultation. Nigerians should not panic; we are not a violent organisation.

“We have made it abundantly clear that we would not enforce anything. We are not the government and we do not have the power to enforce anything, but we are using legal means because the issue is about Nnamdi Kanu who is heaping abuses on our people and undermining the government.

“We are saying the government must rise to the occasion and checkmate the guy. We may review our position after our consultations , but we mean no harm, we won ’t harass innocent Nigerians, no. It is not in our power to do so.

“The truth is that Biafra cannot succeed even through a referendum. The truth of the matter is that an average Igbo man does not believe in Biafra but rather some few individuals are clamouring for it just to survive.

“When the referendum holds, it would not favour Biafra. It will not favour Kanu. He cannot speak for strong intellectuals like Chief Emeka Anyaoku and other Igbo intellectuals.”

He alleged that Kanu was being sponsored by disgruntled Nigerians in foreign countries seeking political relevance, adding that such people were being deceived by Kanu.

“Most of those funding the Biafra agitations are Nigerians in foreign lands who have lost relevance. They want to come back home. They want to be more relevant because they are not relevant at all.

“Kanu is using their psyche assuring them that there would be a new Republic of Biafra. We are doing what we are doing to expose them to the international community that these guys are just jokers and that they are not speaking for the Igbo.

“The real Igbo who want to stay in Nigeria are more than 80 per cent and he cannot in any way speak for them . Through a referendum, you would get to know that truly, more Igbo believe in Nigeria,”‎ he said. Dailypost.

  1. Yerima Shettima, you are not speaking from the depths of your heart, l know too well as Hausa Fulani man you will never in your life suggest for the national assembly to create space for referendum because you know too well that Biafra is a blood cell in the life of every Biafran man, so if you are saying that the Igbos will disappoint Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is understatement , let me tell you what you don’t know as an Hausa Fulani man, every Biafran born individual want freedom especially freedom from Hausa Fulani oligarch. Now there is a lot of hypocrisy by been one Nigeria with Hausa Fulani, people from different lineage entirely, we don’t share anything in common with Hausa Fulani so why should we be together with you people in the first place, culture different , tradition different, religion different just tell me what makes us one with you people , just one Nigeria for mouth , only just the oil nothing else . Please Yerima do everything you can to call for referendum today, because you might change your mind tomorrow just like Gowon who signed Aburi documents coming back home refused to stand by his words that’s the kind of people you Hausa Fulani people are, hypocrisy upon hypocrisy, now you are saying it when it comes tomorrow you will deny that you never said

  2. Chioma AdaYahweh

How can these grandpas of the Northern Nigeria be youths? If the people of the East still want to continue to be in perpetual slavery let them no support Referamdum. In fact it makes me mad when l think of the Igbos whom the Hausas used to adour in those days, become the Hausas savernts and slaves. See those they say don’t know anything are now the authorities of the country, Nigeria. It’s a pity. Look at their God sent son to get them out of this mess they are bent in handing over to Hausa/Fulanis to kill. But the Hausas are protecting thier so called adult-youths. Igbos, to who have you given your senses? Every time u carry your loads on the head running like mad people back and front. You have sold your identity and your respect. Upon all your efforts to make Nigeria an Independant country, after serving British they handed you over to Hausas for them to contiue to be your slavemasters. How is the mighty fallen! If you people ever go to them again they shall urinet and excret in your mouths, bate me. If u are still the children of the Most High Yahweh the Elohim please make a “U” turn and come back home.. YHWH bless Biafra!!
    I remain Chioma.

  3. Why are you wasting time then? It is the biafrans that want the referendum, this is not about Nnamdi Kalu OK? Mr We Are Born to Rule Mentality! Makakwu!
