Avoid grazing on farmlands, council tells herdsmen

By Mohammed Baba Busu
Awe (Nasarawa State) –   The authorities of Awe Local Government Council in Nasarawa State on Friday advised herdsmen to refrain from grazing on farmlands to avoid clashes with farmers.

The Director of Personnel Management (DPM) of the council, Mr Ahmed Edeh, gave the advice in Awe at the inauguration of the newly elected members of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, a group made up of herdsmen.

Edeh, represented by his deputy, Mr Saleh Abubakar, also called on farmers not to resort to self help no matter the damage to their crops.

He urged the farmers to rather report their grievances to the appropriate authorities for necessary action, saying this would promote peace and boost food production in the state.

“Without peaceful co-existence between farmers and herdsmen, agricultural production and the socio-economic development of the country will be affected negatively, ’’ he said.

Edeh, who noted that no society could develop in an atmosphere of rancour, urged herdsmen and farmers to maintain peace in the interest of national development.

“Peace is the necessary requirement for development of any nation as we are all aware that peace is priceless and non-negotiable,” he said.

He restated the commitment of the council to initiating good policies and programmes that would promote peace in the area.

Also speaking, the State Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Mr Mohammed Liman urged new members of the association to be dedicated to their duties to justify the confidence reposed in them.
