Yola – The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency said it had arrested 127 suspects and seized illicit drugs weighing 1,763.22 kilograms in Adamawa, from January to August ,2017.
Dr. Wale Ige, the state Acting Commander of the agency disclosed this during a press conference on Monday in Yola.
Ige stated that the development followed the launch of “Operation Quicksand” to check the activities of drugs dealers and users.
” From January to August,2017, the command arrested 127 suspects and made various seizures to the tune of 1,763.22 kg of narcotic and psychotropic substances .
” The arrested suspects are made up of 124 males and three females, while the monthly average of the arrests is about 16 persons per month.” Ige said.
Breaking down the seized substances, the acting commander said that Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as ” Indian Hemp” was the highest, with a total of 1,203.56 kg, followed by Tramadol tablets and capsules weighing 281.14 kg.
Others are Cough Syrup with Codeine, 257.15 kg; Diazepam, 7.37 kg; Exol-5, 1.5 kg; Rohypnol, 827 grams; Pentazocine injection, 27 grams and 14 grams of Cocaine.
In the area of conviction, he said that during the period under review, 50 persons were successfully convicted by Federal High Court in Yola to various jail terms totaling 98 years and eight months.
He expressed concern over the age bracket of arrested suspects and convicts, which he puts at between 22 to 45. (NAN)
