Minna – The Chairman of Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, Alhaji Ado Abubakar, has added his voice to the push for local government autonomy in the country.
Abubakar made this known on Saturday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna.
According to him, autonomy for local government was the only way forward for grassroots development in the country.
“Autonomy for local government is the only way any meaningful development can take place at the grassroots.
“If local government autonomy is actualised, payments will be made to us directly and certain deductions won’t be made.”
He appealed to state Houses of Assembly to support the autonomy when the national legislature passes the bill to them for their contributions.
The chairman called on the new leadership of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) to ensure the actualization of councils autonomy.
“With the swearing of the new President of ALGON, who happens to be from Niger, our call on him is to live up to expectation.
“He has said that he would give his all to see that local governments are given autonomy.
“I can assure you that we will give him all the necessary support he requires to achieve that objective,” he added.
He highlighted some of his successes to include renovation of 14 schools as well as construction of an ultra modern market among others. (NAN)
