Buhari’s FERMA Appointment Lopsided – Enugu APC Alleged

The Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Monday expressed anger over what it called lopsided distribution of federal appointments in the State.

This followed its total rejection of the appointment of Mrs. Laureta Aniagolu as a board member of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA.

The party, therefore, announced that to put an end to such unacceptable appointments, it was dispatching a letter to President Buhari as well as Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Speaking after an Executive Committee meeting of the party, the Party’s Chairman in Enugu, Dr. Ben Nwoye, described the appointment of some Enugu indigenes into some positions by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was grossly objectionable.

Observations by DAILY POST showed that all the appointments made so far were concentrated in Eke and Egede, all in Udi Local Government Area of the State.

Members of the party claimed that the appointments were being influenced and skewed in favour of Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama and the Special Assistant to President Buhari on Justice Reform, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku. They are both from Eke Ward, in Udi.
Apart from the duo, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu is also from Eke ward.

Other people appointed so far from the State include: Dr. Joseph Iloh, from Udi- a Residential Electoral Commissioner; Justice Pearl Enejere, from Igbo-Eze South Council Area- chairman, governing council, Usman Dan Fodio University as well as Engr. Uzo from Egede- Director of Planning and Development, FERMA.

The latest of the appointments, which stirred the present controversy is that of Mrs. Laureta Aniagolu, who was named as one of the board members of FERMA.

Her appointment has sparked outrage among the members of the party, with Nwoye describing it as against the constitution of the APC.

Nwoye told journalists at the press briefing that Aniagolu was not a member of the APC and had also been working for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State.

He declared: “I believe that the spirit of the APC constitution forbids our party in government from giving appointments to non-members.

“Those who made the recommendations are not friends of the President; they don’t care about the political implication of such recommendation.

“Investigation show the minister of foreign affairs is a cousin of Aniagolu and Iloh, the REC is immediate cousin of Ibekaku.

“There as 260 wards in Enugu State and for appointments to be concentrated in Eke ward, which can only boast of 5000 voters’ registration strength is totally unacceptable.

“The only appointment made so far that is justifiable is that of Osita Okechukwu, the DG of VON. He is one of us, a party man, worked with us, laboured with us.

“Where was the minister when we were labouring here? Where was Ibekaku when we were building the party? Where was Aniagolu?

“So, the members of the APC in Enugu East senatorial zone are offended; members from Enugu North are offended; even members from Enugu West that are good-spirited individuals are grossly offended.

“Udi Local government cannot be occupying all the political appointments; these are haters of President Buhari; these are haters of APC.”

Nwoye who also lamented that the party’s guber candidate in the 2015 election, Barr. Okey Ezea was yet to be given any appointment unlike others, then queried: “why is there such hatred for the Enugu APC? We believe that Mr. President loves Enugu but those making the recommendations hate Enugu State.

“So, we will resist it; we are writing Mr. President; we are writing the Senate President.”
