The Comrade Senator gave the advice on Tuesday when he took to his twitter handle @ShehuSani in reaction to the news making rounds about the imminent border closure.

In the words of Senator Shehu Sani: “It’s wrong to shut down the land borders because of rice smuggling. Our layers of security operatives should be able to combat or prevent smuggling without suffocating legitimate businesses and stifling border communities.

Sundiata Post recalls that the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development,  Chief Audu Ogbe on Monday yesterday in Abuja while speaking with youths in a leadership clinic under the auspices of Guardians of the Nation International (GOTNI) disclosed the plan to shut the border.

He informed that the federal government has commenced the implementation of certain strict measures to check against smuggling of rice into the country.

According to him, part of these measures is to shut down the land border between Nigeria and neigbouring countries. He said the announcement which will be made in a few days’ time is aimed at avoiding smuggling of foreign rice into the country.

Although he did not mention the particular country and border, Ogbeh noted that shutting the borders had become necessary to encourage local production and sustain the country’s economy.
