Lafia –   The Nasarawa State Government says it is partnering with Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and other spirited individuals toward enhancing girl-child education.
Mrs Asibi Omeri, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, made this known while receiving officials from the Every Girl Initiative Organisation (EGIO), an NGO on a courtesy visit on Friday in Lafia.
Omeri, represented by the Director of Child Welfare, Mrs Yomi Adagadzu, said education of the girl-child was paramount.
She urged parents to ensure proper upbringing of their children to curb moral decadence and other social vices for a better society.
Omeri also urged parents to give adequate attention to the education of their children, especially the females, adding that education was the best legacy parents could leave for their children.
The Permanent Secretary also frowned at the attitude of some parents who do not give adequate attention to the education of their children, especially the females.
“I urged you parents to live an exemplary life by shunning all negative acts in the society so as to inculcate good moral values on your children,’’ she said.
She said further that one of the mandates of the ministry was to cater for the welfare of the girl-child.
“I therefore, called on the stakeholders to join hands with the state government in order to protect the rights of the girl child in the society.
“There should also be punitive measures against anyone caught violating the fundamental rights of the girl child,’’ she said.
Earlier, EGIO Project Manager, Mr Ezodu Collins said the visit was part of activities to mark the 2018 International Day of the Girl-Child.
He restated the commitment of the organisation towards protecting the rights of the girl child.(NAN)
