  1. USA. Where do you start? It isn’t a country, it’s a world!
  2. India. Vast, ancient, mysterious…a must for anyone interested in the spiritual life.
  3. China. Like the USA and India it is a world. And like India it has a history that astonishes you.
  4. Japan. The cleanest, most civilized nation I have ever visited. Its culture is also utterly unique.
  5. UK. The cultural depth and richness is dazzling. The land of Shakespeare, Dickens, Tolkien, Orwell, the Beatles. How can the same nation produce Jane Austen AND the Sex Pistols? I also like the fact that it contains individual nations (England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland), each with their own identity yet each contributing to the UK itself.
  6. France. Like the UK it is a place of extraordinary cultural richness. Between them, the UK and France have produced a huge chunk of the world’s greatest writers, scientists and philosophers.
  7. Germany. The land of Beethoven, Goethe, Nietzsche and Kant. So much more to this great culture than Hitler.
  8. Italy. Arguably the most beautiful towns and cities in the world. As EM Forster once wrote, Italy’s towns ruin your own country for you. Everywhere seems so ugly and drab in comparison.
  9. Russia. The land of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. Like Germany, unfairly linked with blood and war.
  10. Nepal. My personal favorite. Wonderful, smiley, kind people and, now that Tibet is under Chinese control, the home of Buddhism.
