Abuja (Sundiata Post) – FIDA Nigeria Abuja branch on Friday visited Gwarimpa General Hospital and adopted the Labour Ward as part of activities lined up to mark its 2022 law week,
This adoption is in compliance with FIDA -adopt-a-ward initiative where every branch is expected to adopt a Ward.
Sunduata Post recalls that the theme for this year’s law week is : “Addressing The Concept Of Gender Justice In Nigeria.”
Addressing the Senior management team of the hospital, the International Director of FIDA Nigeria, Mrs Ezinwa Okoroafor said that FIDA exists to protect the interest of women and children based on the realisation that the happiness of the home and strength of society depend on the well- being of the women and children.
She therefore said coming to this hospital and adopting the Labour ward is apt because each time a woman gives birth, she puts her life on the line. So in doing that, we want a situation where the woman does not pay the price with her life because she wants to help towards the building of the nation. She noted that giving birth is a work towards national development.
On what FIDA will do for the hospital having adopted the labour ward, Mrs Okoroafor said it’s not a sprint or one-off thing, it is a journey and we will work closely with the Chief Medical Director to know the areas of need for the ward and assist in our best way possible.
The International Director hinted that in adopting the ward, FIDA is contributing to Nigeria in ensuring that every woman who gives birth, as much as possible, the incidences of death arising from maternity issue is reduced.
Earlier in her opening remarks, the Chairperson of FIDA Abuja branch, Mrs Chibuzor Maureen Nwosu said that the realisation from fact-checking result that lots of indigent women and children access the hospital made FIDA know that they actually need assistance.
Continuing she said: “Since we have adopted the Labour ward, it is now our responsibility to come from time to time and render the help we can. Adding that FIDA has noted some of the needs of the hospital and assured that they will come back and actually do something that will impact the lives of women and children.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of FIDA Abuja 2022 law week, Chioma Onyenucheya Ukoh informed that huma component to the activities was introduced to make the law week a wholesome event and in furtherance to the mandate of FIDA which is for cartering for the welfare and interest of women and children. And there is no other better place to go to except in hospital where women daily, by the minutes labour to bring to life for the growth of society and humanity and that is why they are here today, she added.
She further informed that they are in the hospital to give charity support to the hospital and women who use the labour ward.
In her reaction, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Gwarimpa General Hospital, Dr Bello described the visit as loudable and commended FIDA Nigeria Abuja branch for the visit and donations as well as their interest in the welfare and well-being of the women.
The CMD and her team led the members of FIDA Nigeria Abuja branch on a tour round the hospital where FIDA members observed the state of things that need their support and intervention. Some of the items required in the hospitals are: B.P apparatus, at least two weighing scale, standing air-conditioner, chairs, autoclave, sonicaid, bedside lockers, window blind among others.
The highpoint of the visit was the donation of items to the hospital management.
Recall that the 2022 law week which started on Friday, 18th will the rounded up on Tuesday 22, 2022.
