Abuja (Sundiata Post) – The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has tasked the Nigerian Army to imbibe a team spirit (esprit-de-Corps), and endurance to enable them face the adversary during combat.
The Army Chief stated this in Jos on Thursday, at the 3 Division Nigerian Army during the Opening Ceremony of the Nigerian Army Inter Formation Platoon Combat Obstacle Crossing Competition 2024.
Represented by a Special guest of honour, Maj.-Gen. Musa Etsu-Ndagi, the COAS said the competition seeks to improve the endurance, team spirit, esprit-de-Corps, leadership skills and obstacle crossing techniques of the competitors in pursuit of his command philosophy.
“Obstacle crossing skills is no doubt a major recruitment of troops in combat, and I am glad that the Directorate of Army Physical Fitness adequately tutored all the competitors on the extant obstacle crossing technique in the Nigerian Army”, Lagbaja said.
He encouraged the Army to bring to bear, all the skills acquired in the course of training during the competition as it will enable them to realistically assess the obstacle crossing capability of the Army.
“The competition will also identify areas for improvement in the skills of obstacle crossing”, he said.
On his part, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubarka said the security challenges in the country are multi-faceted and multi-dimensional in nature which requires high level of training, endurance and stamina, hence the need for continuous training of troops.
He said the competition is not only to maintain proficiency, but to also continually enhance troops capabilities, to effectively tackle the evolving and dynamic security security threats adding that it is common knowledge that the military profession is hinged on team work and cooperation.
“This obstacle crossing competition would underscore the significance of teamwork, while de-emphasing individual brilliance performance.
“Additionally, the competition would focus on testing the operational readiness of the participating formations in a competitive atmosphere.
“I must quickly point out that this event is not merely to attain the training objectives for year 2024 training circle, but it is also, in consonance with the COAS’s vision.
“I therefore urge you participants to be good ambassadors of your respective formations and put in your best shot during the competition.
“Let me also remind you to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and abstain from every form of malpractice during the competition. I am convinced that, at the end of the exercise, the set objectives of enhancing your operational efficiency would have been achieved thereby making you better personnel, better able to professionally discharge your constitutional roles”, he said.
