ABUJA (SUNDIATA POST)- The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has called for continued support and investment in para athletes to enhance their performances.
Oluremi made the call at the reception for the contingent to the just concluded Paris 2024 Paralympic games at the State House on Saturday in Abuja.
“This success is a call to action for all of us to continue to support and invest in our athletes.
“We must ensure that the structures, resources, and opportunities necessary for their continuous growth are not just available but enhanced.
According to her, the celebration of the team goes beyond the medals, but for the spirit of resilience that defines the athletes.
“I am delighted to welcome and receive our Paralympic contingent, who has just returned from Paris, not only with medals but with stories of courage, determination, and inspiration.
“With two gold, three silver, and two bronze medals, you have shown Nigeria and the world the meaning of perseverance, dedication, and true sportsmanship,“she said.
She said that the stellar performance of the athletes has gladden her heart,
“I want to specially acknowledge Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Onyinyechi Mark who both won gold medals in the Para-powerlifting event. The Paris 2024 Paralympics marks the beginning of a new chapter for Nigerian sports.
“Our Para-athletes deserve the very best, and we must strive to provide the much needed incentives to celebrate them,” Oluremi said.
She acknowledged and commended the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John owan Enoh and his team for their dedication, passion and remarkable work on the team.
“To the leadership of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, Federation Presidents, coaches, support staff, families of the athletes and the entire team working behind the scenes, I say well done.”
Enoh in his remarks, appreciated the first lady for her kindness and support for the team.
He hailed the athletes, especially Oluwafemiayo and Mark for their heroic performance, saying the female para-powerlifter demonstrated great skill, determination and an excellent spirit.”
Olufufwmiayo , who is also the captain of the team, expressed gratitude to the first lady for the warm acceptance and reception.
“We are full with joy, I’m overwhelmed and I lack words to say in appreciation of what the first lady has done for us,”he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Paralympics team won seven medals, comprising of two gold, three silver and two bronze. (NAN)
