Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, has confirmed he’ll run for president again in 2027 under the Labour Party.
“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” Obi stated.
This declaration comes amid reports of a potential opposition coalition involving Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, leaning towards the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform. Obi attributed internal crises in the Labour Party and PDP to external forces aligned with the current administration.
“What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere,” he said. Obi emphasized the importance of a strong opposition, saying, “Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
Obi urged Nigerians, especially youth, to safeguard democracy and ensure electoral transparency. He called for structural reforms, including age limits for elective positions. As he’ll be 65 by 2027, Obi hinted at retirement from active politics thereafter, saying, “By the time the 2027 election holds, I will be 65 and I don’t want to be contesting elections in my 70s.”
