YOLA – Three commercial taxi drivers in Adamawa were on Thursday commended for providing free services to pregnant women in their communities.
The three are members of the NURTW in the state.
Malam AbdulRazak Bello, a Desk Officer of the Society for Family Health (SFH) in Adamawa State, commended the drivers in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola.
Bello gave the names of the drivers as Umaru Hamidu, Iliyasu Hammangabdo and Adamu Modibbo.
He said the trio had, over the years, been rendering free emergency services to women in their communities in Gombi, Hong and Mubi-South local government areas respectively.
Bello, said SFH and Transaid, an American NGO would, in collaboration with the state branch of NURTW, provide the over 800 volunteer drivers with necessary training.
He said the training would be carried out under Emergency Transport Scheme (ETS) to enable them effectively provide such humanitarian services across the 21 local government areas of the state.
Bello said the training would commence this month with master trainers who were expected to later train other volunteer drivers from various local governments.
One of the drivers, Umaru Hamidu, when contacted by NAN, said he had been rendering informal voluntary service for more than over 10 years in Garkida village of Gombi Local Government.
He said the commendation was a welcome development and would further spur him to render more selfless services to the community.
“I have been doing this for the past 10 years and many parents in my community have named their children after me as a mark of honour, ” Hamidu said. (NAN)
