Abuja (Sundiata Post) – The 3 Division Nigerian Army, Bassa, near Jos, has immortalised the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen, Taoreed Lagbaja on Saturday December 28, 2024, when it commissioned a recreational park at the Barracks, named after the wife of the late Army Chief, Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Park.
The foundation of the park was laid by the wife of the late COAS, before the unfortunate demise of her husband, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division Nigerian Army, Maj-Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar, said during the commissioning of the recreational center.
Gen. Abubakar who is also the Commander, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), said the recreational memorial park also reflects the Army’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and well-being of troops and their families, as well as the supportive community that surrounds the Barracks.
According to him: “The establishment of this park is a testament to our dedication to improving the quality of life for our personnel and their families, given that the nearest recreational facility is over 30 minutes drive away, the creation of this park is both timely and essential.
“It provides a space for relaxation, recreation, and family bonding, elements that are crucial for maintaining the morale and mental health of our dear troops.
“Over the years, we have initiated various strategies aimed at enhancing the welfare of our troops. From renovating soldiers’ accommodations to constructing new ones, and even awarding electric motorcycles to our best-performing soldiers,
“Our focus has consistently been, on recognizing and rewarding the hard work and sacrifice of our personnel. These initiatives are a reflection of the respect and gratitude we owe to each of you for your service to our nation”.
He continued: “Today is not just about inaugurating a park; it’s about laying a solid foundation laced with memories for future endeavors that prioritize the welfare of our military families in line with the vision of our forebears.
“This facility is a legacy project, part of a series of initiatives we have launched to ensure that our personnel feel supported in their duties across the nation.
“It is our duty, to ensure that while our soldiers are deployed fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities, their families are nurtured and cared for, in environments that promote happiness and well-being”, he said.
Earlier in her remarks, the wife of the late COAS, Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja, said the park is a heartfelt gift to the children and families of the Army living in the barracks, adding that it is more than just a space, but a symbol of commitment to providing a nurturing environment for children and a place of relaxation for adults.
Represented by the wife of the GOC, who is also the Chairperson Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), 3 Division Chapter, Mrs Fibishola Abubakar, said the Army wives are also proud to unveil the NAOWA football team, comprising children from both NAOWA and the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA).
“This team embodies unity, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Through football, our children will learn discipline, cooperation, and perseverance, strengthening the bonds within our community”, she said.
