New Delhi – An Indian court on Monday sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir state.
“Three others, all police officials, were given five years in prison for destruction of evidence,’’ defence lawyer Farooqui Khan said.
The battered body of the girl, belonging to a Muslim nomadic community was found in a forest near Kathua city in January, 2018.
The three men sentenced to life imprisonment are Sanjhi Ram, a retired government official and custodian of a local Hindu temple, another local, Parvesh Kumar, and a policeman, Deepak Khajuria.
“They were found guilty of murder, rape and assault besides other charges.
“We will appeal against the verdict in the high court,’’ Khan said.
