Lagos – Thirty baseball players from across the country will feature in the annual Major League Baseball (MLB) tryout holding from Sept. 1 to Sept. 3 at Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos.
MLB is a professional baseball organisation, the oldest of the four major professional sports leagues in the U.S. and Canada.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme is initiated by MLB to scout for young talented players to advance their career in foreign leagues.
Robert Onyuikwu, Vice-Chairman, the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association (NBSA) Technical Commission, told NAN in Lagos that three MLB coaches would arrive in the country for the programme.
Onyuikwu added that a clinic would also be used to update coaches on the latest trends in the sport.
“We are expecting three coaches in the country for this year’s MLB programme and coach, Yinka Adelusi who is also an MLB resource person in Africa will be working with them.
“From our own end, we will do everything possible to ensure that the programme is hitch-free,’’ he said.
He urged participants to take advantage of the programme to further their career.
NAN reports that players selected at the tryout will later
participate with others selected from other parts of Africa in an elite camp in South Africa. (NAN)
