Geneva – The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said no fewer than 3,000 people were expected to cross into Macedonia every day in coming months.
Melissa Fleming, Chief Spokeswoman of the agency stated this on Tuesday in Geneva and said that Syrians fleeing their war-torn homeland and surrounding countries would constitute most of the refugees.
She said that there was no possibility of any end to the influx of people in the coming months.
Fleming cited continued violence in Iraq and Syria and worsening conditions for Syrian refugees in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon as factors that had aggravated the situation.
“The 28 member-states of the European Union must ensure equitable distribution of asylum-seekers.
‘’We honestly believe that if correct measures are taken, this is something that Europe can handle,‘’ she said. (Reuters/NAN)
