The Ekiti State Government on Friday in Oye-Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area, paid N23 million terminal benefits to 44 past political officeholders.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Ganiyu Owolabi, said that the payment was in fulfilment of Gov. Kayode Fayemi’s pledge not to isolate them by paying their terminal benefits.
Owolabi said N13 million was meant for 23 people in Oye Local Government while the remaining N12 million would be shared among 21 people at Ilejemeje Local Government.
According to him, the money was outstanding furniture allowance payable to all past political officeholders, irrespective of whichever party each belonged.
He said that the exercise was a continuous one as all past political officeholders in the remaining 14 Local Government areas would soon have their turn.
In his speech, the Chairman of Oye Local Government, Mr Adegoroye Bamigboye, commended the governor for approving the payment, which he described, as “unprecedented’’ in the history of the state.
Two former councilors, Mr Olanwunmi Olajoke and Mr Johnson Ajisegiri, from Oye and Ilejemeje Local Government, respectively, who spoke, lauded the governor for the gesture.
