An official of the Borno Sports Council, Ummara Zara, on Wednesday in Abuja challenged the decision of the judges in the boxing match between his state and Delta.
Zara told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) that the supervisors were unfair to have declared the Delta boxer winner of the match.
The match was between Caroline Maxwell of Delta and Omotoyosi Samuel of Borno, both female and in the 57kg category at the semi- final round of the competition.
“It is ridiculous that we all know that this is a youth championship and we are introducing this kind of bias. How then can we expect sports to grow in this country?
“We travelled all the way from Borno to Abuja, in spite of the kind of issues we have in the state, only to come here and someone will put up this kind of decision. It is unfair.
“Everyone saw the match and they know that my state’s boxer beat the other opponent. The result was biased, and we want them to cancel the match and call for a rematch,’’ he said.
Zara who is the council’s Director of Administration and Supply, also added that they would make a formal statement about the issue.
He however expressed doubts that the matter would be treated justly.
“We will put the issue in writing, but we know that it is for formality sake, because the boxing supervisors have already made a decision and that is the Nigerian mentality.
“But I am not happy with the outcome of this match at all,’’ the Borno sports council official said.
